Autumn Knight’s practice draws on elements of humor, improvisation, gatherings, and timing. The incorporation of comedic relief and breaking the fourth wall in her work invites viewers into another realm of reality. In her ongoing performance piece, titled Sanity TV, Knight creates a site-specific talk show, taking on the role of a TV host, and the audience becomes the show’s guests. Knight’s work invites viewers to examine the rigidity and structure that envelop certain events, such as panels and livestreams, and to allow our imagination to interact with immediacy. Taking Sanity TV to different places, such as Berlin in 2018, prompted Knight to consider the collective psyche and basis of humor in other cultures. Growing up in a Black household where humor was a shared yet sacred language laid the foundation for Knight’s practice. She quotes, “Humor is a practice and a shared language you learn at home.” During Knight’s earlier years of studying visual art in school, a teacher encouraged her to attend a specialized school in performance art after witnessing how Knight’s personality had the potential to expand her practice and capture people’s attention in a way that fosters connectivity. In Knight’s workspace at the Fountainhead residency, she had shiny silver tablecloths covering the walls. This element functions as a representation of her reflective experience at Fountianhead. During her residency, she found it essential and valuable to be at Fountainhead, where she met artists and art administrators in Miami and held discussions about not only her practice but also the current state of performance art. This experience has allowed Knight a moment to reflect on all the work she has done and create new work that speaks to the many reflective conversations she had during her residency.
